About the event

Join us for the second installment of our Hearth & Timber: Experiences of the Past series at Marble Springs! This month, we’re diving into the world of 18th-century hygiene and self-care—from frontier practicality to fashionable beauty routines.

The program will be held at our spring house grotto, a fitting historic setting for this immersive experience. It begins with a guided talk on how early Americans understood health and cleanliness, covering the science, traditions, and cultural expectations that shaped daily life.

After the lecture, participants will try their hand at crafting historical-inspired DIY items like lavender water, tooth powder, and other cosmetic or hygiene concoctions based on real 18th-century practices.

Audience Advisory: This program includes historical discussion of the human body, hygiene, and bodily functions as they were understood in the 18th century. While content will be presented in a respectful and educational manner, some topics may not be suitable for…
