Kick off our 2025 educational series, Hearth & Timber: Experiences of the Past, with a hands-on workshop that brings history to life! In this butter-making class, you’ll learn how early Appalachian families made their own butter from scratch — and how you can do the same at home.
We’ll guide you through the process step-by-step, from cream to churn to flavoring, with insights into both historical methods and modern adaptations. You’ll even get to mix in herbs and seasonings to make your own custom-flavored butter to take home.
This is the first program in a monthly series focused on traditional frontier and survival skills used in the Appalachian region. It follows the success of our 2024 Beyond Petticoats series, which explored the stories and domestic arts of 18th-century women.
